Lesson 1
Pick a route people will get up early for
A good club trip is one main thing, one small bonus and a place to eat, all within a drive people can handle there and back in one day.
Start from the drive, not the destination
Open the map from your meeting point and draw a circle: how far can the group drive, do the main thing, eat, and get home before people are too tired to talk? For a day trip that usually means a couple of hours each way. Longer is fine for a weekend, but then you are planning a night too.
Inside that circle, look for places that are a little too much hassle to do alone: a trailhead with tricky parking, a festival that needs tickets in advance, a lake where you need a kayak.
One main thing, one bonus, one food stop
- Main thing: the reason people sign up. A waterfall hike, a pumpkin patch, a light show, a city you have never seen.
- Bonus: something small on the way that costs little time. A viewpoint, a bakery, a short walk through an old town.
- Food: a real place where a group of 10 can sit without a reservation drama, or a picnic you plan for. Hungry people stop having fun fast.
- Toilets: know where they are before and after the main thing. Nobody asks, everybody needs it.
Scout it yourself first
Go once on your own or with a friend before you sell the trip. You will find out where the trail gets muddy, which parking lot fills by 10:00, and which turn the GPS gets wrong. That is the stuff that ends up in your trip description and makes people trust you.
Check the official rules before you advertise
- Park pages: opening hours, seasonal closures, parking fees, and whether groups need a reservation or permit.
- If you charge money for a trip into a national park, the park may require a Commercial Use Authorization. Many state parks have their own group rules. Check the park's official page or call the office.
- Events: buy or reserve tickets for the whole group before you announce, or say clearly that tickets are separate.
- Weather plan: decide in advance what happens if it rains. Move the date, switch to a backup route, or go anyway with ponchos. Say which one in the post.
