A short, scenic Bucks County hike along the edge of High Rocks, looking down on the horseshoe bend of Tohickon Creek. About an hour from Philadelphia.
High Rocks is a sheer cliff above the Tohickon Creek gorge, about an hour’s drive from Philadelphia. The trail runs right along its rim, and from the top you look down on a horseshoe of creek wrapped in forest, which is especially good in fall when everything turns red and gold. There are often climbers on the wall below, which is fun to watch.
We hike a loop of about 3.5 miles (5.5 km) with roughly 500 ft of gain: along the cliff edge to the viewpoints first, then down to the water and back up. It takes about two hours at an easy pace with photo stops. We meet in the morning at the trailhead parking, and afterward anyone who wants can grab coffee or lunch in one of the Bucks County towns on the way home.
It’s an easy hike with a couple of steep bits, roots, and rocks. Good for beginners and for anyone who wants a half day outside without spending the whole weekend in the car. One rule: there is no railing at the edge, so we keep the cliff-edge photos sensible.
